As many of you know, school gardens can be powerful tools for engaging with the broader community and, as a bonus, they provide us with a bountiful harvest every year that tastes even better when it is shared with others! It is with this in mind that Heritage Academy has embarked on the "Potato Project" a new initiative that Growing Up Organic is proud to support! The Potato Project encourages schools, clubs, businesses and families to set aside a space (4' by 4' is enough) to grow potatoes for the Ottawa Food Bank's Community Harvest Program. As Mr. Rhodenizer, Vice Principal of Heritage Academy writes: if twenty individuals or groups plant one tower of potatoes each, we can donate one tonne of potatoes to the Ottawa Food Bank this Fall!
A
tower of potatoes you say? Why yes! Potatoes are indeed a miraculous vegetable, producing mounds and mounds of tubers in a very small space thanks to their ability to grow vertically! Mr. Rhodenizer and Mr. Hansen at Heritage are busy putting together potato tower kits which will be available at the end of April for a small fee. The towers will be ready for pickup on April 27
th at the
Heritage Academy School Garden kick off. There you will get the
resources and support you need to ensure your Potato Tower is a success. If you can't make it to the event, contact GUO and we will be happy to help you connect with the project.

Comme plusieurs d'entre vous le savez, les jardins scolaires sont d'excellents milieux pour engager avec la communauté, et de plus, les jardins nous offrent une récolte ample qui goutte encore meilleure lorsqu'elle est partagée avec les autres. Avec cela en tête, Heritage Academy a commencé le nouveau "Projet Patates", une initiative que Grandir BIO est fier d'appuyer! Le Projet Patates encourage les écoles, les clubs, les lieux de travail, et les familles de mettre de coté un endroit (4' par 4' suffit) pour cultiver des pommes de terre pour en faire un don à la Banque alimentaire d'Ottawa. Comme Monsieur Rhodenizer, Vice-Principal de Heritage l'a indiqué, si une vingtaine de participants plantent chacune une tour de patates, nous pourrions cultiver une tonne de pommes de terre pour le Banque alimentaire cet automne!
Une
tour de patates vous dites? Et oui! Les pommes de terre sont de légumes presque miraculeuses dans leur habilité de grandir verticalement! Par conséquent, on peut cultiver beaucoup de pommes de terre dans un espace minime. M. Rhodenizer et M. Hansen de Heritage Academy travaillent fort pour produire des trousses de tour à patates pour vous! Les trousses seront disponibles à un prix modeste à la fin Avril. Le 27 Avril, Heritage Academy célèbre le début de la saison dans leur jardin et vous invite de venir procurer votre trousse ainsi que des ressources informatives pour assurer le succès de votre récolte.
